What’s past is prologue; what to come, In yours and my discharge

I’m not one for quotes but this seemed apt considering the recent move.

So I’m back to my old blog in a manner of speaking but I’ve taken some of the best bits of XNA-UK and re-imagined them here.


Set the Record Straight

First off XNA-UK is closing down just because of the times and how the community has consumed that site of late (read what you will in to that)

NOT BECAUSE XNA IS GOING AWAY

(Read this previous post to get the scoop, I’m also planning on an update to that due to recent announcements I’ve been involved with).

XNA-UK fulfilled it’s goal and direction to aid and help new users and old alike in the realm of XNA and general game development, but as time past it because to focused on that goal and in all fairness lost touch.  As bloggers on the site we did vary the content to meet the needs of our followers but the site itself remained static.  Alas the “Call to Arms” in the last month was not enough to save it.


New Mission Statement

My mission as always as a indie community developer has been to grab new and exciting technologies, rip them apart, put them back together and then lay it all out for readers to digest and learn from my experiences, a teacher if you will but I do it for fun and because that’s who I am. 

Where I can i also develop existing technologies and evolve them with patterns and practices that make sense and are generally a good idea. (I also love to shout about stuff other people do that I feel are downright amazing, more on that later)

So in coming back to my roots here I’ve taken what feedback there was in the last days of XNA-UK from the Voting Poll we setup and run with that for future content.  The poll will continue and Both Charles (RandomChaos) Humphrey’s (who also just got re-elected to that MS Elite status of MVP for XNA) and I will use that for driving forward.

in the running are the following categories and I’ve setup my new blog already to deal with these as time permits.  They are all areas I am keenly invested in and where I lack, Charles is picking up on his new blog.

In no particular order:

    Even More XNA!

    Unity3D

    Mono Develop / Mono Game

    SunBurn

    SharpDX / ANX (and other XNA derivatives)

    Metro Development (both Windows Phone and Windows 8)

    Frameworks and Best Practice (MVVM, IOC, DI, etc)

    C++/DirectX/OpenGL – Charles is currently picking up these!

At the moment my pipeline is quite full with my own projects (got to make a living somehow outside work and if possible without work! Smile with tongue out) and so my posts are usually related to issues or interesting frameworks that I’m implementing.

But as the pipeline cools expect to see more experimentation stuff again, vote for more to guide that direction!


What’s hot and what’s not

As I said I’ve aimed to bring what I can from the old XNA-UK site and for now I’ve settled at a happy medium:

There’s the main focus the blog, but behind each series in the blog there is also a forum where you can ask questions, debate each article in depth or get more info on the samples contained within.

I’ve tried to make the site as Metro / new styled as I can but there is still a lot of work to do, feel free to Vote or comment on what you like / don’t like or want to see more of!

Sadly not all could be saved for the Internets but if there’s a need I can see what I can do to bring it back (in some form), of the headlines the following features of XNA-UK will be no more:

 

    The XAP test service for Windows Phone
    The Rare samples (XNA projects done by the Rare team)
    XNA-UK meet-ups and groups (although discussing plans, see the vote)
    The Developers and published projects contact lists
    Demo services like the Leaderboard samples
    The meet and greet forums (as with most others)
    A host of other samples and downloads (some will be saved)

There’s too much more to go into detail here, were doing what we can and we still have backups of the site so it’s not gone forever but just out of reach.

The XAP test service was one of the things we were most proud of but not too many people took advantage of, those that did got critical feedback on their projects during the early phases and most have gone on to have many downloads and been been featured proximately in the marketplace. 

From feedback I’ve had the main reasons it didn’t take off were due to people seeing the word “Service” and thinking it would be paid for which it wasn’t, all help was completely FREE of charge.  The other was because of the XNA-UK hosting of the service and most thought it was only for XNA projects, again wrong as we were offering a XAP test service not an XNA test service.

In any case if people want it, it may come back as a completely separate entity, but with the marketplace test kit and the beta service this maybe redundant.  Personally I don’t think so because the UX and design guidance along with the many years of mobile and development experience we had from all the testers was invaluable.  We’ll see.
